In Which Nerissa Leaves Her Charge in the Care of Cats of Dubious Repute

Chapter 9 is up! The following is an excerpt. You can read the whole thing here.

“All right,” Nerissa said. “First things first, if you don’t want a prince, then what do you want?”

The look of shock on the girl’s face was almost too much. “You mean I don’t have to marry anyone?”

Nerissa shook her head. “Of course not. Nowhere in the contract does it stipulate matrimony. I’m here to help you deal with your situation. That’s all.”

“But I thought . . . The faerie said . . .”

Nerissa rolled her eyes. Faeries. “And that is precisely why they are not granted the wand. It’s true that most girls end up wishing for a handsome prince to save them from all their troubles, but you needn’t just because it’s tradition. In fact, if that isn’t what you want, the magic wouldn’t work that way for you anyway. So what do you want?”
