Myles stumbled back when the dragon and Mara disappeared. He could have sworn they’d disappeared sideways, but that didn’t make any sense. He snapped his mouth shut and dropped his arms to his sides. They ached as though he’d been weaving complicated magic for the better part of a week, and he felt empty and drained inside. He turned on his heel, not sure what he’d find, but hoping the prince had managed to stay in one piece. If they were lucky, Mara’s spell wouldn’t have any backlash attached to it.
He had time to catch sight of the prince bent over a small white body stained with crimson and flower petals before a flash of light blinded him. He threw up his arms to protect his eyes, but it was too late.
“Baldemar?” Myles cried. He pitched forward in the direction he’d last seen the prince, hoping the sudden magic hadn’t been a belated parting gift from the mad woman with burning holes for eyes.
